    • Safety Goggles
    • (3) 20 x 5” Redwood Pieces
    • (2) 4 1/4 x 5” Redwood Pieces
    • (2) 4” Furring Strips
    • Tape Measure
    • Handsaw or Jigsaw
    • 18-Gauge Brad Nailer or Small Wood Screws
    • Drill and 1/2” Bit
    • Sandpaper: grit 220
    • 2 Sheets Newspaper
    • 1-2 Cups Gravel
    • Potting Soil
    • Flowers

  1. Wearing safety goggles, measure and cut all wood pieces using a handsaw or jigsaw.
  2. Sand the edges of each cut piece as well as the surface of the redwood.
  3. Squarely align one short end piece with the end of one of the longer side pieces, and attach with a brad nailer.
  4. Attach the other side piece to the already-attached end piece, then close the square frame with the remaining end piece.
  5. Evenly space and drill three holes in the bottom wood piece to create drainage holes.
  6. Flip the box over, and attach the bottom piece along the sides and ends with the brad nailer.
  7. Attach wood furring strips around the bottom of the planter to raise it, allowing water to drain.
  8. Spray entire box with varnish, and allow it to dry.
  9. Place a layer of newspaper and an inch of gravel at the bottom of the planter to help with drainage, then fill with potting soil.
  10. Plant flowers in the box, and display it on an outdoor shelf, table or below a window.
